Vale de Maceiras Village:
Breaking Bread with Locals

Awash with the traditional blue and white homes of Alentejo, the quaint village of Vale de Maceiras is the perfect backdrop to prepare and partake in traditional meals. In the village’s communal, stone oven you’ll have the chance to bake bread with a local that shares baking secrets passed down through the generations.
The bread will complement the pic-nic table set up for your lunch at a nearby country house, where you’ll taste cured meats, cheese, olives, jams and wine. To connect the dots, you’ll have a chance to visit each of these producers at their farms, factories and wineries.
The experience includes a guided stroll through the village with visits to two churches (blue and white like the homes) that safeguard the oldest religious artifacts in the area.
The rich cuisine of Alentejo is enough of a reason to grab a seat at the table, but your experience is topped with a performance of Cante Alentejano, traditionally performed by a group of local men singing a cappella. Cante Alentejano is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
